Pathway for Livelihood Initiatives Kenya (PLIKEN)
PLIKEN’S HISTORY
PLIKEN was established in 2016 as a non-governmental organization with the goal of addressing poverty in disadvantaged communities.

The founder was motivated by a deep concern for teenage girls who were forced to leave school because of early pregnancies, lack of access to feminine hygiene products, and other challenges. In impoverished communities, girls often drop out of school and engage in risky behaviors, jeopardizing their health and future. These circumstances result in food insecurity and prevent children from attending school due to lack of funds. PLIKEN strives to uplift these women through mentorship programs and send their children to school with confidence to better themselves.
PLIKEN Saturday Mentorship Program
Our focus is on holistic child development, encompassing spiritual, physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional growth. Our Saturday Program caters to children enrolled in the education sponsorship program, ensuring continuous development without disrupting their school calendar. We emphasize early intervention to nurture and mold young personalities, fostering hope and resilience. We also offer nutritious meals to curb malnutrition among children in our program.

PLIKEN Confidence Kit Program
We strive to support early adolescent girls and boys by providing life skills training, self-esteem-building activities, and providing safe and reusable feminine hygiene products. Through this initiative we aim to nurture girl-child education by keeping them in school, creating an open and safe discourse about the importance of Menstrual Health, not only for girls but for boys and the community at large, by promoting dignity and confidence.

PLIKEN Sponsorship Program
As one of our main programs, we address the educational needs of orphaned and vulnerable children from the age of pre-school all through their academic journey, providing tuition fees, educational materials, and emotional support. This comprehensive approach ensures children from impoverished communities can continue their education, leading to brighter futures for them and their communities.

PLIKEN Teen Mothers Economic Empowerment Program
We work to equip young, single mothers with life skills, technical training, and counseling therapy. This program helps them secure stable sources of income and start small businesses, fostering economic independence and better futures for their families.
Future Plans:
Confidence Kit Sewing Center
PLIKEN plans to set up a sewing center to satisfy the increased demand for reusable menstrual hygiene products, which will not only provide a sustainable supply of reusable menstrual hygiene products to the girls but will also provide economic empowerment opportunities for teen mothers in the program who will work as seamstresses and marketers of the products.

Education Center
PLIKEN would like to set up an education center, to house all the children in the education sponsorship program for a holistic upbringing and approach. The education center will provide a safe space and a conducive environment for children to thrive and reach their potential. The center will also provide education opportunities to teen mothers who dropped out of school by providing skills like hairdressing, baking, and many others that will help them secure jobs or start small businesses.
