On the 4th of July, I am going to get my couch potato like body into action to support COVID relief in Uganda! I’m going to do an amateur triathlon.
Beginning with a 2k kayak leading into a 20k cycle and finishing with a 5k run. For those that know me this is A LOT for me (I can just about run 4K now). I know it will be hard but I will be pushing myself to support the Good Hope Initiative during their time of need. You can support my triathlon and the Good Hope Initiative’s need for food and basic necessities by donating here:
Anyone that knows me knows I have a deep connection to Uganda. When I left high school I decided to volunteer with Project Trust. I spent a year teaching at the Salvation School which is the school created by the Good Hope Initiative. During this year I met so many amazing people and gained friendships I still have to this day. As I lived on the school grounds I was fully submerged into rural Ugandan lifestyle which meant a year of bucket showers, charcoal stoves, jiggers (Dust fleas) and long drops! Although it may sound cliche my year here taught me a lot about the important things in life and put a lot into perspective. I gained so much from everyone I met and would love to do my part to give something back during these testing times.
A bit about Good Hope Initiative: the Good Hope Initiative is a non government community based organisation aiming to help children in the rural Village of Myanzi and surrounding villages. The organisation was set up and run by Deo Kagimu and started off on a small scale by supporting a number of vulnerable children in the village and over time has organically grown into a successful primary and nursery school for children in the area. With the option for those living afar to board to prevent long and unsafe travels. The project is forever growing and aim to help more and more children gain an education in these rural villages.
Why I need your help: As COVID-19 has affected us all in many different ways, this has caused a huge financial and resourceful strain on the project. Right now there is an especial strain on food and hygiene resources (soap, Vaseline to prevent jiggers burrowing into your feet etc) This is where your money will go, to help Deo buy these supplies for the children and families the Good Hope Initiative supports.
I have teamed up with the brilliant EACH charity which has helped the Good Hope Initiative for many years. While I was teaching here with the funding efforts of EACH, the school turned from a papyrus school to a solid brick building. The funds also helped to build a water tank on the school grounds to solve the long journey to the bore hole we were originally used to! In addition their funds meant that Deo was able to buy pigs to create a sustainable income for the Good Hope Initiative. Their funding also helps many of the students to further their education by funding high school tuition fees. These are just some of the examples previous funding through EACH has helped the project!
